September 7, 2023-Colegio ng Lungsod ng Batangas- In an effort to enhance their preparedness for potential disasters, CLB students and faculty gathered at the Track Field (oval) on Thursday, September 7, 2023, at 9:00 AM for an earthquake drill. The exercise was held in conjunction with the National Earthquake Drill which took place all across the nation.
The primary objective of the drill was to ensure that the CLB community is well-prepared and organized in case of a real disaster. As the recent increase in seismic activity serves as a reminder, natural disasters can strike unexpectedly, and being ready can make a significant difference. The exercise commenced with a two-minute siren, signaling the start of the drill. Students and faculty swiftly made their way to the Track Field through designated exit stairs. However, it was noted that the evacuation process took longer than expected, with participants spending approximately 11 minutes reaching the designated evacuation area.
Sir James B. Macalalad, who observed the drill, expressed his concern, saying, "The prolonged evacuation time raises questions about our readiness for real-life situations. We must be better prepared, as national disasters cannot be predicted, and swift action can save lives."
Despite the extended evacuation time, the participants demonstrated a commitment to improving their disaster response. Sir Gail Magalang, a seasoned faculty member, guided the students back to their respective classrooms after the drill.
One key takeaway from the exercise was the need for more efficient evacuation procedures. CLB plans to work on reducing the evacuation time to a target of just 5 minutes in future drills. Additionally, a decision was made to hold unannounced drills to gauge the community's readiness for unexpected events.
As Colegio ng Lungsod ng Batangas continues its commitment in ensuring the safety of its students and employees, today's earthquake drill serves as a valuable learning experience, highlighting areas for improvement and emphasizing the importance of being ready for any unforeseen disaster.
